What have you been doing to get farm ready?

We both have a keen interest in regenerative farming and have been looking into how these methods can be incorporated in a profitable farm. Emily has a background with horses having ridden since she was young. We've also raised our own lamb in the backyard for meat. Having both worked/working in the irrigation industry we have a sound knowledge of the water industry including licensing and trading. In addition to this, the water industry has also exposed us to a range of farm types and farming methods.

Why are you passionate about farming?

We're both passionate about the potential benifits of regenerative farming for both the profitability of the farm as well as the lifestyle and environmental benifits. We are both practical people who enjoy outdoor physical work and would love the opportunity to see what we can provide to the agricultural industry.

Best days of being a farmer:

Our dream farm is somewhere in the Yea district. We'd be farming a variety of livestock including cows, chickens, pigs and sheep. They'd be strip grazed on high diversity pastures using regenerative principals. We'd have native flowers and shrubs growing along contours providing wind breaks and adding another source of income from the cut flower industry. We'd also have other crops such as garlic which would be marketed at the nearby restaurants and cafes. A good day on the farm would start by checking and moving the stock. We'd undertake maintenance activities including the upkeep of the house garden which sustains the household. The kids would be involved in all activities while they're not at school. We realise that this is a dream scenario but we are realistic, open minded, and would consider any opportunity to make a start at a life in farming.
