What have you been doing to get farm ready?

I have been farming from age 12 (in NZ) initially as a general staff at various market garden, cut flower and fruit production operations, worked on small farm goats, horses, rabbits, poultry sheep, and cattle operations and completed 10 years dairy farming including NZ cadetship in Dairy Farming moving up to a share-farming partnership. I have formal training in Holistic Management, Permaculture and conventional chemical farming. Informal training in Aquaponics, Hydroponics, Organic, Biodynamic and Regenerative Farming Practices. I started up Beautiful Abundance 3 years ago, initially leasing 2 benches at an existing nursery and late last year moved onto a 1ha bare paddock lease which I have built infrastructure for to operate an organic & biodynamic production nursery, seed raising, and market garden business. Currently selling at 5 permanent market stalls in Northern NSW and Gold Coast, 2 small outlets, and farm-direct sales. The business has been profitable but not this year due to drought impacts and building costs. I am operating this business full-time with occasional casual staff assisting. This business is fully transferable to any area.

Why are you passionate about farming?

I'm passionate about farming because you see something from start to finish. You put your heart and soul into it. It's not just a job, its a passion. The growing of sustainable food, and simultaneously maintaining the ecological balance of the land and soil is of incredible importance. I would love to become involved in changing, not only the way in which food is produced, and in reducing commercialized waste by closing the production loops of farming, but also contribute to educating the general public on the importance of supporting local farmers who farm sustainably. I would want to work on the soil to achieve carbon build up and boost fertility and increase yield. It would always be a work in progress with constant small improvements added all the time to benefit the operation or the aesthetics of the place. I love working by myself and being my own boss but I also yearn to share the journey with others through farming co-operatively.

Best days of being a farmer:

I am seeking a permanent location in which Beautiful Abundance's operation can fit complementary into the existing operation and vision of the current owner. I have equity ready to invest in ownership/part-ownership but not sufficient to currently outright purchase a property. Any farm MUST be chemical free. Organic or Biodynamic Certified property would be ideal but not necessary. But any farm in which chemical sprays or fertilizers are utilized I am not able to be involved with. Happy to work with an existing owner to convert a property to Biodynamic or Organic operation. I'm flexible on what type of operation existing farm is but would prefer a poly-culture operation with a mix of livestock and plant production. Definitely keen on incorporating native edibles into operation. Ideal land would have accommodation on site or ability to install tiny house and would be open to retiring farmer remaining on land. Prefer not totally dead flat land (rolling hills) with existing native tree areas.
