What have you been doing to get farm ready?

Currently backgrounding steers on 160 acres with a view to building equity in cattle and current property to leverage and expand. of the 160 Acres, about 120 is cropped with forage crops and what I can't feed off in the paddock through strip grazing is baled and wrapped (Silage) to meet the gaps in seasons (between Crops)

Why are you passionate about farming?

Grew up on 36,000 acres with Irrigated cotton and wheat, and have always had an interest in animals. graduated from UNE with 2nd class honours in Rural science including a thesis on ruminant nutrition at Purdue university in Indiana. Knew working on someone else's farm would never make me enough money so turned around and did accounting which is what I current do (CFO for a large family trucking business) Dream of owning enough breeders to be able to breed, and background steers through to feedlot entry weight. Then if funds permitted, feed a small number through to be able to sell over the hooks, however very hard to compete with steam flaking technology in the big feedlots and as such, grain feeding will not make a great addition, but to turn off premium quality background steers would be awesome.

Best days of being a farmer:

I would like three farms, verys imilar to the Prime Ag Model, one in the new England area such as deepwater, one in the western downs and one further north into the lower egions of central queensland, eg roma Wandoan, rolleston etc. this would give a degree of drough resilience. Each area is also possible to do a little farming to put fodder reserves away. Like I currently do, to meet any feed gaps between seasons. I would like to build a herd of angus and Hereford cattle, and there are so many great parts to it, from simply looking out over a herd of healthy cattle on well preserved pastured or farmed forage crops, to intensively feeding livestock and seeing weight gains. (happy to challenge the regime of high grain diets and have in the past worked at a small feedlot that achieved similar results with only 50% grain and no health issues as a result)
