What have you been doing to get farm ready?

We currently are dairy share farmers with owners that live interstate at the base of the Strezleki ranges. We provide all cows, machinery and labour and operate the farm as if it is our own, making day to day and longer term decisions for all aspects of the farm. We report to the farm owners monthly via email and occasional phone call. Dirk has been a farm manager at other farms in dairy, sheep and some cropping.

Why are you passionate about farming?

Both Dirk and I have grown up with a love of agriculture and it's been our careers all our working lives. We are committed to the dairy industry. We are passionate about producing premium quality milk and breeding and rearing the best quality cows that we possibly can. We own our herd of cows and the machinery required to operate a dairy farm in this area. While we would love to own the farm we are on, the farm owners are elderly and have said it will pass to their son in Sydney to manage and do as he wishes when they pass away. They are not interested in selling it out of the family.

Best days of being a farmer:

Our dream farm is somewhere in this area surrounding Yarram. The kids are in school here and I've moved my elderly parents here to keep an eye on them! We've built up a good network of people around us. Our current farm is a peat soil and we've worked hard to improve the soil biology and would do the same at our dream farm. We want to keep dairy farming and rearing heifers and hopefully some dairy beef if we have the land to do so successfully. Best days - plenty of quality home grown fodder, plenty of water, the cows milk well and all livestock are well fed. We have time for family and no issues with water, power or dairy plant! We work long hard hours, 7 days a week to ensure we do the best we can for our cows and family.
