What have you been doing to get farm ready?

Attending biodynamic farming workshops, reading literature and enrolling to complete a 2 year certificate in Biodynamics. I also intend doing a Permaculture Design Course later this year. My wife Lorraine was brought up on farms and has experience in raising livestock and working with sheep.

Why are you passionate about farming?

Fewer people appear to be getting into farming. There is also a lot of concern around with GMO crops, use of chemicals and loss of food security. I am interested in either converting an existing to farm to biodynamics or working on a biodynamic property with a view to achieving Demeter certification one day. Repairing the land, increasing soil fertility and raising animals is of primary interest to us. Working with the forces of nature, getting away from monoculture farming, growing a variety of crops and animals - this is our vision for farming into the future.

Best days of being a farmer:

We are flexible where we go. Biodynamics uses several techniques to improve soil fertility so even places with the least rainfall can still produce good crop yields when managed effectively. We would like a mixture of vegetable crops that we could sell on to markets and also locally through a farm gate arrangement. Animals would also be a must including goats, chickens, ducks, aqua ponics. My best days, my wife and I would enjoy just sitting watching our animals go about their day, the baby animals and their antics, the crops in the fields and giving thanks for the bounty nature provides us. Although not in a financial position to purchase a farm right now, we would be interested in pursuing either a lease arrangement, working on the farm itself and paying off gradually or some other option agreeable to the owner.
