What have you been doing to get farm ready?

All of it. Branding has been done from social media and website construction. Business planning has been done with development plans for all elements of farm operations and KPI's set. I have been hobby beekeeping. I have been successfully breeding the heritage breed of chickens in Blue laced red Wyandottes with signifcant improvements in breed standards. I have refined what i believe to be the most efficient chicken caravan set up for the conditions, breeds and animal welfare.Soil improvement and water harvesting and storage has been a significant part of my sustainable land management consulting and organic compost production over the last couple of years. Growing garlic and horticultural practices have been gained with design being the start of efficient process from planting to harvesting. Natural advantages of the region and farm activities being undertaken has been considered to ensure efficient operations and risk mitigation for optimal success.

Why are you passionate about farming?

I was a city boy growing up but the only job I wanted when I finished high school was to be a national parks ranger. That evolved to being a forester. As a professional forester undertaking planting projects(planting some 16000 plants in the last couple of years) and organic compost production as well as sustainable land management consulting, it has evolved again. In 2014 I joined the Queensland Fire Service and found out I am diabetic. Good food has always been part of who I am and that took on a greater importance with this news and when combined with living and working on the Granite Belt in Qld, there were a lot of conventional farming practices that instigated a desire for good clean, nutrient dense, organically grown food. So the passion for being outdoors and working with the natural environment has shifted to gaining tremendous satisfaction from seeing crops grow and healthy, happy animals producing good food. No day on the land or working with the natural environment is ever the same and it throws up treasures all the time. When I get to experience that with my daughter Georgia, that is simply priceless. And she is well into her apprenticeship at the age of four as she loves being daddys helper whether it be collecting eggs or fencing paddocks or fixing something. Is there a better way to manage diabetes than spending time in the natural environment with my gorgeous daughter producing great food

Best days of being a farmer:

Any day, knowing that the food I produce and the practices I follow are unmatched in quality, true sustainability and that the surrounding region will benefit from such great products and practices.
